Prada and its roots

Prada was founded in 1913 by brothers Mario and Martino Prada, who opened a leathergoods shop in Milan, Italy. To start with, the shop sold leather goods and imported English steamer trunks and handbags. Mario Prada was very "traditional", believing women should not have a role in business! In fact, he prevented female family members from working in the company. However, Mario Prada's son had no interest in joining the business, so ultimately his daughter Luisa became his successor, running it for almost twenty years. Then, in 1970 her own daughter, Miuccia, joined the company. Muiccia went on to take over the business from her mother in 1978.
