The origins of the Ray-Ban Aviator

The Ray-Ban Aviator was first developed by Ray-Ban in 1937. Characterised by dark, often reflective lenses having an area two or three times the area of the eye socket, the metal frames with wire temples of Ray-Ban aviators have hooks which hook behind the ears.

The Ray-Ban Aviator got its name from the oblique teardrop shape, which matched those of the flying goggles they were selling at the time to the US Army and Navy.

The Ray-Ban Aviators are not straight as seen with typical eyeglasses but bulge out slightly. This unique design gives great coverage of the eye, preventing as much light as possible from entering the eye socket from any angle.
