The birth of the Ray-Ban Wayfarer
The Ray-Ban Wayfarer, almost identical to the Wayfarer 2140 model shown above, was first designed in 1952 by Raymond Stegeman, an optical designer who filed countless patents for Bausch and Lomb, at the time the parent company of Ray-Ban. The Wayfarer incorporated state-of-the-art plastic molding technology, which marked the transition between a period of eyewear with thin metal frames and an era of plastic eyewear. The Wayfarer was worn by countless celebrities of the film and music industries, one of the most notable being Roy Orbison.
