"It’s very unusual these days to experience such supportive & helpful “aftersales” service & you’ve gone quite some way in restoring my faith. Many thanks again & will certainly be in touch when I next need some sunglasses."
Ray-Ban Aviator's origins
The Ray-Ban Aviator was invented in 1937. In the early 1930's, Lieutenant John MacCready came home from a balloon flying adventure during which the sun had inflicted permanent damage on his eyes. He asked Bausch & Lomb to create sunglasses that would give protection, yet look fashionable. Bausch & Lomb registered a patent in 1937. The aviator prototype was extremely light and made from gold-plated metal with green lenses made from mineral glass, designed to filter infrared and UV rays. These revolutionary sunglasses were quickly adopted by pilots from United States Army Air Corps. They aviator gained commercial popularity when General Douglas MacArthur was photographed wearing them when he landed on the beach in the Philippines in World War II.
