What is it about Ray-Ban sunglasses that makes them such a hit? Is it the fact that the brand is a household name, being one of the most iconic
names of modern times. Or is it because they are simply excellent sunglasses, offering unrivalled style and value for money?
Perhaps it’s both those reasons. Either way, you cannot deny the history of the Ray-Ban brand is long and impressive.
Not many people are familiar with their origins and if you fall into this category and are interested in how Ray-Ban started, then read on…
Once upon a time an officer in the US army when on a ballooning flight adventure. This took place around the early 1930s.
With the seed of the iconic Aviator borne in his mind, he approached a lens manufacturer called Bausch and Lomb.
The company was borne and in 1937 a patent was taken out by Bausch and Lomb that protected their baby,
the Aviator, from being copied. This new company was in business and off and running very quickly.
It wasn’t long before US Air Force pilots realised that this sunglasses style was excellent for them, affording them protection from the sun’s peripheral rays,
which in turn didn’t just protect their eyes, it also meant they could fly with greater confidence. However, the popularity of Ray-Bans didn’t begin and end with
balloonists and pilots. Bausch and Lomb were very clever. They made sure they invented a sunglass style that was not merely just functional and technologically way
ahead of any other on the market, they also made sure that they were cool and chic. This meant that they quickly became popular with the man and woman
on the street. That’s the other amazing fact about these first Ray-Bans – they were and still are, extremely popular with both sexes. When you think about it,
they were possibly the most innovative and popular fashion accessory ever created.
Eyewear that had technologically superior lenses, eyewear that gave Air Force pilots an advantage over the enemy in life-or-death situations,
and eyewear that looked so good that they appealed to everyone. All these advantages rolled into one pair of sunglasses. Genius.
The next big chapter in the story of this iconic brand started in 1952, when they launched the equally iconic Wayfarer.
Once again, Ray-Ban broke into new ground, this time with a frame made from a very strong plastic called an acetate.
The Wayfarer was extremely light and hard-wearing. Coupled with the fact that it was also a style that appealed to
both sexes, the Wayfarer soon caught fire with celebrities, adorning the faces of several stars of the silver screen. Once that happened, it was inevitable
that the Wayfarer became wildly popular with the wider public, and for a time was even more popular than the Aviator.
To this day, Ray-Ban sunglasses continue to innovate, with new styles such as the RB4181, a modern Wayfarer style,
and the RB4174, a retro ladies style.
With styles like these, they continue to dominate the high-end sunglasses market and seventy years of from their inception, the brand is stronger than ever.
